Originally the Chemical Laboratory, this building was constructed at the cost of $6,000 under the Tappan Administration.  It was at that time, one of a kind, since it was the first building dedicated entirely to the study of chemistry in the nation.[18]  Although it was only a small one story structure, the building saw seven additions between 1861 and 1901.  By then the building had been modified to two levels and had a maximum dimension of 160 by 180 feet.[48]  After the new Chemistry Building was completed in 1909, the Department of Economics filled the voids once occupied by the Chemistry Department.  The Department of Pharmacology remained in the northern wing.[48]

In December of 1981, the building was destroyed by a fire ignited by arson.  The Economics Department moved to the North Ingalls Building and in 1986 made its permanent home Lorch Hall.[18]
