Originally the Chemical Laboratory, this building was
constructed at the cost of $6,000 under the Tappan Administration. It was at that time, one of a kind, since
it was the first building dedicated entirely to the study of chemistry in the
nation.[18]
Although it was only a small one story structure, the building saw
seven additions between 1861 and 1901.
By then the building had been modified to two levels and had a maximum
dimension of 160 by 180 feet.[48]
