In June of 1923, the
Regents received a monetary gift from Senator James Couzens
of Detroit on
the condition that it be used to construct a
building for housing students or graduate nurses.[43]
With increased applications to the Nurses Training
School, the need for adequate housing
for these students became necessary for their success. Detroit
architect, Albert Kahn was selected as the architect and the building was
completed slightly over budget at a cost of $622,724.76.[43]
Located on East Ann Street,
just north of Palmer Field, this five story building forming an “H”
originally contained 250 rooms (mostly singles) with a small amphitheatre,
offices, and classrooms. On the second
floor, the lobby, living room, library (now an ITCS computing site), and
several offices feature walnut paneling still beautifully preserved today.[43]
In 1955, and addition was put onto the east end of the
building at a cost of $1,754,000 to house 530 girls. It was designed by Ralph R. Calder and
constructed by Spence Brothers of Saginaw.[43]
Today, Couzens Hall houses both
men and women and is no longer exclusive to students who are in the School
of Nursing.
