Original Chemistry Building with additions

The original portion of the chemistry building was constructed in 1909 at the cost of $271,000.[41]  The need for this building came out of the necessity of space despite the numerous additions to the existing Chemical Laboratory.  Designed by Smith, Hinchman, and Gylls, of Detroit, the new building was located just east of the Mall on the north side of “the diag.”  This four story structure later received an addition in 1949, designed by Louis Kingscott and Associates at the cost of $3,205,000.[41]

In 1960, Pharmacy moved to a new building and the building became entirely dedicated to chemistry.  In 1989 the Willard H. Dow Laboratory addition was constructed creating state of the art labs and classroom facilities, as well as large lecture hall space.[41]  Like many of the older buildings on campus, the Dow addition has a massive light court (indoor) and entrances arranged with the diagonal sidewalk paths across Central Campus so that circulating pedestrian traffic is not interrupted.  Because of its design, the building has won several architectural awards which are viewable in the main atrium.
