The first of the
buildings constructed on the edge of Palmer Field was the Women’s Athletic Building. The building was completed in 1928 and was
two stories with a basement.[37]
The front had tall white pillars, while the rest of the building was
constructed of brick. Designed by Fry
and Kasurin of Ann Arbor, the building cost about
$154,000.[37]
The building provided space for offices, equipment distribution,
storage, and locker rooms. It also
housed the Women’s Athletic Club.[37]
This building was demolished with the coming of the Central Campus Recreational Building.
Long before the Women’s Pool had been constructed in
1954, funds were raised to support the project starting in 1937. In 1951, about $1,116,000 was available so
that construction could proceed.[38]
The site was chose on Forest
Street (today Washtenaw) not far
from Palmer Field. The completed
building is a two story brick building and contains a 75 by 44 foot
pool. It is named after Dr. Margaret
Bell, former chairman of the Program of Physical Education for Women. Today, the pool is joined onto to the CCRB.[38]
The Central Campus Recreational Building is
a three story structure with two levels located almost beneath the ground
level. The structure was built in 1976
and has “3 basketball courts, volleyball courts, an elevated running track, a
six lane swimming pool, and weight rooms.[107]
The building is also home to the Division of Kinesiology.
