"The Rose" by Amanda McBroom
written by Akuma-chan

*Some say love, it is a river*

[We see Youko Kurama, falling into a swiftly-running river.]

*That drowns the tender reed.*

[He sees a patch of reeds growing near the edge and tries to get them to grow
out to him, but they drown, break, and are carried off by the current before
he can grab them.]
[Fade to next scene]

*Some say love, it is a razor*

[We see Youko Kurama wielding a leaf-sword, fighting desperately for his life
against a horde of guards.]

*That leaves your soul to bleed.*

[A close-up shows him bleeding heavily from numerous wounds, breathing hard.]
[Fade to next scene.]

*Some say love, it is a hunger*

[We see Youko Kurama stealing treasure after treasure after treasure.]

*An endless, aching need*

[None of the treasures are ever enough; they are discarded, and he moves on to
the next.]
[Fade to next scene]

*I say love, it is a flower,*

[We see Shiori sitting in a garden, surrounded by all kinds of flowers.]

*And you its only seed.*

[She looks down, and the camera follows, focusing on the green-eyed infant in
her arms as Shiori smiles tenderly.]
[Cut to next scene.]

*It's the heart afraid of breaking*

[We see a young Minamino Shuiichi, not yet of school age, watching some kind
of party with an indifferent look, but there is a flash of wistfulness in his
eyes.]

*That never learns to dance*

[Shiori comes up and draws him out of the corner onto the dance floor, smiling
as she teaches him a few dance steps.]
[Cut to next scene.]

*It's the dream afraid of waking*

[We see the young Shuiichi reaching hesitantly for a squirt gun at a boardwalk
game booth, and drawing his hand back as if he's afraid the whole thing will
vanish around him.]

*That never takes a chance*

[Shiori puts her arms around him and guides his hands, helping him aim the gun
and win a prize.]
[Cut to next scene.]

*It's the one who won't be taken*

[We see a close-up of young Shuiichi, his eyes narrowed suspiciously at
something.]

*Who cannot seem to give*

[Pan out to see Shiori giving him a small gift of some kind, smiling at his
look.]
[Cut to next scene.]

*And the soul afraid of dying*

[We see Youko Kurama, lying on the ground as a pool of blood seeps out around
him, a frantic and terrified look on his face.  The scene is in black and
white, with Kurama in very faded colors, and the blood brilliant scarlet.]

*That never learns to live.*

[Fade to Shiori, riding a roller coaster, laughing and screaming and loving
every minute.  Pan in to face shot.]

[Fade to next scene, leaving an after-image of Shiori's smiling face over
all.]

*When the night has been too lonely*

[Flash-fade in of Youko Kurama, a head-and-shoulders shot, his hair waving in
the breeze, a stark, alone look on his face.  The scene is overlaid faintly
with Shiori's face.  Fade to black, also overlaid with Shiori's face.]

*And the road has been too long,*

[Flash-fade in of Youko Kurama, staring over his shoulder at an endless,
winding road, looking tired, his shoulders slumped.  As before, it is overlaid
with Shiori's face.  Fade to black, overlaid with Shiori's face.]

*And you think that love is only*

[Flash-fade in of Youko Kurama, looking achingly sad and wistful.  Also
overlaid with Shiori's face.  Fade to black-overlay.]

*For the lucky and the strong*

[Flash-fade in of Youko Kurama, same look as before.  He closes his eyes and
turns away bitterly.  Still overlaid with Shiori's face.  Fade to black-
overlay.]

*Just remember in the winter*

[Slow fade in of Youko Kurama, lying in the same pool of blood as before, but
with no scenery, just black around him.  It doesn't quite fade in all the way
before slowly beginning to fade away.  The overlay of Shiori's face is barely
visible, no more than a few faint lines, so that it almost seems to be a
background, rather than an overlay.]

*Far beneath the bitter snow*

[Pan in to Youko Kurama's face, slowly fading out.  His face takes on a
fatalistic look, and his eyes drift shut as it begins to snow.  The scene
fades out completely, leaving the very dim overlay of Shiori's face, nearly
unseen.]

*Lies the seed that with the sun's love,*

[The overlay fades in from black, and as it comes completely into focus, the
camera pans out, to reveal Shiori looking out the window at a beautiful
garden.  Her smile brightens.]
[Cut to next scene.]

*In the spring, becomes the Rose.*

[We see a head-and-shoulders still shot of the familiar, teenaged face of
Minamino Shuiichi, smiling and laughing.  He is surrounded completely in white
light that blurs the edges of his outline.  As the last words are sung, the
shot slowly fades to white.  The last note trails off, and the words
"Dedicated to Mother" fade in in black, scrolling letters.]
