Week 1 Tues. Sept. 6

1) Introduction to course --syllabus, projects, grading, etc.
Assignment schedule: 3 projects total
2) Screening of variety of work:
Discuss Video History
, early contexts
Student work, William Wegman, Sadie Benning (in-camera work),
Paul Pfeiffer - Art 21 DVD
"Telling Lies" - (ResFest#2 DVD)
Experimental Documentary: "Subconscious Art of Graffiti" (ResFest#2 DVD)

Guerilla News Network-re-editing "found" footage
3) In-class demo/exercise: Using mini-DV Camera--a primer: tripod, vcr, camera, basic composition, tape stock, use of STILL PHOTO option on cameras, camera as deck/recorder.
In-class exercise: record with class cameras, tripods

Homework for next class:
1) Write down 2-3 ideas you have for a final video piece (1-7 mins) due Tuesday Sept. 13
2) Work on Project #1:In-Camera Edit, bring in your DV tape on Thursday Sept. 15

Begin Digital Editing 101-Discuss history of editing, use of TIME as a property, creation of composite imagery--download editing tips sheets from RESOURCES section of CTools, Review handouts #1-5,

In-class demo/exercise of Final Cut Pro 5.0: Each student should create new project, log and capture footage from provided tape

Homework: Tape a variety of footage to play with for our practice edit session next class.
Week 2 Tues. Sept.13

1 )DIGITAL EDITING 101 cont'd. --Handouts #1-5, especially #5 Print to Video
In-class demo/exercise of Final Cut Pro 5.0: Each student should create new project, download footage, create a basic edited sequence with their appropriated footage, output back to tape.

2)Individual meetings to discuss final project ideas

1) Work on
Project#1-In-Camera Edit due Thursday, Sept. 15

2)Using the camera as an audio recorder, wear decent headphones and record up to 10 mins. of interesting audio: traffic, industrial, airplanes, cooking, household, street, etc. Be as creative as possible. Bring this tape in for next class.

Week 3 Tues. Sept. 20

1) Go over Reading #1 Questions due today.
2) More audio: diegetic vs. non-diegetic sound
Screening of experimental work with creative uses of audio : "Family Album," Alan Berliner, others tba
Edit a short sound collage by the end of class with at least 2 tracks. Play your piece (1 min.) piece for class at end of class.

1 ) Shoot footage for Project #2

2 ) Bring in 1 digitized image (photoshop scans, digital photos, scanned drawings, scanned objects, images from the web, etc.) that are 72 dpi and are approx. 900 x 1500 pixels. These images should be related to your project.
Week 4 Tues. Sept. 27

1) Lighting - 3-Point lighting, different lighting types
2) Advanced Editing Techniques:
Compositing (keying, mattes, Importing Photoshop images (using your images, Handout #9)
