Project #2: ACTS of ART: Art in REAL TIME

A 1-5 min. ACT

OPTION 1: Translate a personal experience/memory into a real time presentation/story telling/performance up to 5 min. in length. Pieces must consist of 2 parts:
a) a visual human activity: gesture, task, reflex such as:

cleaning drawing creating something wrapping something up
eating posing destroying something unwrapping something, uncovering
writing running preparing something talking on the phone (create a conversation)
exercising chopping dressing/undressing dancing
playing a game scratching drinking waiting

b) a TEXT/narrative: words, audio, story, a list, poem, rhyme, directions, recipe, transcript of a conversation, news story, public service announcement, journal entry, etc.
This can be spoken, pre-recorded, projected, spoken by the audience, sung, etc.

OPTION 2: Use your presence/body to transform our normal understanding of a specific PUBLIC place. Pieces must consist of 2 parts:

a) physical activity (see above)

b) specific site that gives the piece meaning. Can you make the viewer experience the familiar in a new way?

alley classroom in a window
front lawn the quad Huron River
Music School pond bus stop escalator/stairs

 

FINAL PRODUCT to be presented/submitted should include at least one of the following:

  • video documentation/video performance
  • photographs that document the act over time
  • live presentation or performance during class
  • site specific presentation or performance


OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

Audience: Who do you want to see this piece? Is it a specific audience or a general one? An art audience, female or male, children, adults, seniors, students, in town, at night, outdoors, indoors... Does the space have some historical or contemporary relevance that you want to comment upon?

Props: Do you need any objects to make the idea more clear? Costume? Objects? Diagrams, maps, drawings....You can also use Power Point and your laptop to present/project movies, images and audio

Text: Are you going to read it? memorize it? improvise it? sing it? ask the audience to participate? prerecord it?

Space: In what space are you going to place your piece or self? a public open space? an intimate space where one person enters at a time? a space that is limited in size or light or visibility? How will the space affect your piece? How will your piece affect the use of the space?

TOOLS: You may use whatever tools you like, but we will continue to cover Final Cut Express (for video/audio editing), DV cameras, basic audio, and voice over.
You can also utilize Power Point or Keynote to create a sequence of images or texts.
