Photoshop workshop: Image basics, Color basics, Layer basics, Introduction to Selection tools

for next class, bring in at least 2 things you would like to scan: can be photographs, text, objects (safe to put on the scanner), sketch out ideas for hybrid "being" and your "conceptual map"

Discuss 1st Project: Digital Hybrid and Conceptual Map

Discuss student "map" and diagram findings on web, 1st assignment

Written Homework #1-Everyday Images: A Deconstruction: Start making mental notes about images you see everyday. Can you figure out how they have been constructed digitally from several layers? How many images go into making a single image? Bring two to class with your "deconstruction" for Thursday.

Look at these tutorials by Caroline Clerc and basic explanations. We will be covering these in class. By end of class, have a rough version of 1st composite/hybrid.

Photoshop workshop cont'd: layer masks, quick masks, paths, paths to selections, pen tool
Look at the work of various artists who use collage, digital compositing including: Tina Lopez, John Heartfield, Hannah Hoch, Romare Bearden

Discuss Written homework #2, appropriation/hybridism as artistic practice
Work on your project: bring in at least 3 images to composite in photoshop

Photoshop workshop cont'd: work on your project in class, discuss how to submit assignment online in Coursetools Dropbox

Week 4 Tues. Jan. 29

First assignment due: Digital Hybrids: Being and Conceptual Map

From 1:30 -2:30: work on your photoshop images and submit them online via the Coursetools web site

Name your images: yourname_hybrid.psd

Introduction to Animation and Web workshop: Re-Introduction to HTML, creating Gif Loops
Discuss 2 homework assignments
Discuss Project #2: Manipulating Time with Digital Animation and Sound
Look at internet art sites, discuss web interfaces, navigation, and animations
Look at Web Monkey's online tutorial (Lesson 2) for gif loops and simple animations
Download Gif Builder and save it to your Zip Disc
By end of class: create a rough gif loop animation with images and/or text

Readings: HTML primer by Joe Burns Continue with web site construction, links, basic text

Start sketching out ideas for simple animation, bring in an image you would like to "ANIMATE" or cut up in photoshop as an animated gif loop
Read over and do Joe Burns' tutorials 1-7 for basic HTML

Thurs. Feb. 7

Homework

Animation workshop: create 2 Gif loops for your web site
In-class time to work on GIF loops, load them to your "starter" web site
Make at least one a hyperlink ("clickable")

A) Written Homework #5: Immedia 2002!!! Due Tues. Feb. 19
Digital Art Festival starts Friday Feb. 8th, 6 pm.
Attend some live events, view the artwork in the galleries, go to a screening. Write about one digital artwork (sound or image).

B) For next class, bring in a CD, web site of sound or music you would like to sample from and HEADPHONES!!!

Week 6 Tues. Feb. 12

Homework:

Audio workshop: Sound Edit 16

In -class:Create at least 1 minute of audio art using Sound Edit 16.

Your audio piece should be a composite from at least 2 sources culled from the web, cd, mp3, quicktime movies, etc. The final file format should be either a WAV or a AIFF file (both are readable on Internet Explorer and Netscape)

Watch video about various "culture jammers," appropriation, and sound artists: "Sonic Outlaws" by Craig Baldwin

Visit the Immedia exhibition at the Media Union

Week 7 Tues. Feb. 19

Homework:

2nd Project Due: MANIPULATING TIME-- Basic Digital Animation and Sound - due by 2:30 pm

Submit them online at the coursetools website and put them on a web page in your own ifs space

1. Create 2 short animated gif loops (for possible use on your web page later) using text or images. Think about a gesture or activity that might take on new meaning when looped infinitely (this is what a gif loop will do on your web page).

2. Create a short digital audio piece using audio samples, interviews, collected or appropriated sounds. This can also be used for your web page later, if desired.

Thurs. Feb. 21

Stop-Action Animation: DV cameras and I-movie

In-class work period using Digital video cameras to design and shoot a short stop-action animation. Create a short piece that uses animation to create realities/events that could never occur, make poetic movement, etc..
