Max Bailor graduated in 2004 from Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA, with a BA in Chemistry. While an undergrad Max did two REU summer internships: one summer with Dr. Peter Norris at Youngstown State University (2002), and a second summer with Dr. Stephen Koch at the State University of New York, Stony Brook (2003).

Max¡¯s current work in the Al-Hashimi group is focused on developing methods to study the HIV-1 Trans-Activation Response (TAR) domain when bound to different ligands. In particular, he is focused on examining the effects of binding from a class of ligands called aminoglycosides (a class of polyamine-carbohydrates), which are the paradigm of RNA binding drugs. Specific projects include the development of residual dipolar coupling (RDC) based methods for high-throughput structure comparison and determination, as well as the development of RDC based NMR experiments for the structural characterization of small molecules. Future work will focus on extending methods and techniques to other systems.
