ABSTRACT
Left mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients often have
impaired
visual confrontation naming. We studied 10 normal and 13 left TLE
subjects with 15-O-H2O PET during visual confrontation naming.
Z-statistical mapping detected multiple regions of significant CBF
increases within individuals. The left fusiform gyrus was activated
in nine normal subjects, but only in two TLE patients (a difference
significant at p<0.001). Other foci of activation were more variable in
normal and epileptic subjects. Impaired naming ability may be associated
with failure to increase CBF in the left fusiform gyrus in TLE
