Abstract of
Smith, G.R. 1993. Cladistics and biogeography of the
Catostomidae, freshwater fishes of North America and Asia.
In R.L. Mayden (Ed.), Ecological Biogeography of North
American freshwater fishes. Stanford Univ. Press. pp. 778-
826.
The sixty-six species of the Catostomidae are classified using all
available characters. Ictiobines are the most primitive subfamily,
followed by the sister pair Cycleptus (E U.S.) and
Myxocyprinus (China). The Moxostomatini and Catostomini are
advanced sister tribes; each consists of large bodied, large-water
plesiomorphic forms and small, derived headwater forms.
