SOCIAL SCIENCES CITATION INDEX

BASIC SEARCH PROTOCOLS

1. CHOOSE A DATA BASE (science, social sciences or humanities) at the initial screen. If you do not choose a data base, the default is the Sciences Citation Index. You may leave the default at all years.

2. QUICK SEARCH is used for finding articles beginning 1987 on a single topic, person, or place (institutional or geographic). It may also be used to find all of the works citing an individual author since 1986.

3. FULL SEARCH/GENERAL is used for finding articles beginning 1987 combining a topic, author, author address, journal title, language, and type of material (book review, journal article, etc).

4. FULL SEARCH/CITATIONS is used to identify cited references (older books and articles cited by the author of a current journal article.)

• Full Words rather than abbreviations for the topic.

• Keyword searches follow Boolean logic (AND, OR, NOT)
  • Phrases are assumed
  • The truncation symbol is *
  • Sample: industrial polic* and japan*

• Author Searching
  • You MUST use the author's last name.
  • Use the first or first and second initial of the author's given names. It is safest to truncate.
  • You cannot use the author's full first name.

• Place Searching
  • Address Abbreviations for places such as universities is incomplete. The entire institution may be abbreviated or only the first word. University of Michigan is searched as Univ Michigan.
  • Name Abbreviations are for companies and agencies.
  • If you are stuck for an abbreviation, use the Corporate Index volume of the printed Social Sciences Citation Index in the Graduate Library stacks (Z 7163 .S67) for clues.

• Initial Search Results provide a list of sources
  • Click on the hotlink to view the full record on the screen
  • Click on the boxes if you want to print or download the list
  • Do not click on the boxes if you simply want to view the records on the screen

• Full Record has links to Cited References (the article's bibliography)
  • Only a handful of the cited references may have hotlinks
  • Many only have a brief reference with abbreviated book or journal title
  • You will need to consult the Journal Title or Book Abbreviation list to identify the complete title
  • The Journal Title and Book Abbreviation links are only available on-line from the Full Search/Cited References menu

• Times Cited
  • Links to articles citing the article on the current secreen

• Related Records refers to additional articles which cite one or more of the items in the bibliography of the item you initially retrieved

• Search MIRLYN for the journal title or book to identify the library's call number for the material

Permits searching by various combinations of author, title in keyword or abstract, journal or author's institutional affiliation AND searching by a cited reference (author, book or journal title, and date).

Choose data base, one or more years, and type of search.

GENERAL SEARCH

General Search is used to identify current periodical articles but CANNOT be used to find older cited references (e.g. you can search the new work citing an old work but not the old work itself).

1. Choose any combination of topic, author, source title, or author's affiliation.

• Use Boolean operators for the topic and * as a truncation symbol
  
• Author must be spelled with lastname and first or first two initials only (e.g. BROWN J*)
• You must use an abbreviated title for a book
  • Title abbreviations are listed at http://isi1.med.iacnet.com/ISI/help/cittitle.html
    
  • Journal abbreviations are listed at http://isi1.med.iacnet.com/ISI/help/A_abrvjt.html

2. Choose language (all, English, Afrikaans, Chinese, etc)

3. Choose document type (all, article, book review, bibliography, etc.)

4. Choose sort method (relevance, date, author, source title)

5. To navigate through record, see Results above.

CITATION SEARCH

Citation Search is used to identify current periodical articles that cite older works in their bibliographies.

1. Choose any combination of cited author, cited title, or year of cited work.

• Author must be spelled with lastname and first or first two initials only (e.g. CAMPBELL, JC*) Use the truncation symbol (*) to be safe.
• For cited works
  • You must use the journal abbreviation listing at http://isi1.med.iacnet.com/ISI/help/A_abrvjt.html for journal titles
  • You must use an abbreviated title for books. Common abbreviations for book titles appear at: http://isi1.med.iacnet.com/ISI/help/cittitle.html
  • You MUST put in the first word but you can truncate it (*). You cannot search on random words in the title.
• You do not need to enter a year. If you do, you can add multiple years, such as 1982 or 1983 or 1984

2. Select all hits by pressing buttom or click on box to select one hit.

3. Choose language (all, English, Afrikaans, Chinese, etc)

4. Choose document type (all, article, book review, bibliography, etc.)

5. Choose sort method (relevance, date, author, source title)

6. Press SEARCH to identify "articles that find selected references"
