The NMSU Library has been a member of the Federal Depository Library Program since 1907 and selects approximately 60% of the sources available from the U.S. government. POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position reports to the Head of the Reference & Research Services Department. The Government Documents Librarian manages the daily operations and services of a new Government Documents unit. Establishes unit goals and priorities. Supervises two classified staff. Oversees the acquisition and processing of federal documents in multiple formats including ongoing retrospective conversion projects. Evaluates and develops the collection. Promotes government information and provides instruction and outreach programs for the University and community users. Provides in-depth reference and research assistance. Provides collection development and serves as a liaison to assigned departments. Represents the Library at professional meetings related to documents. Participates in the library's instruction program (faculty-requested library instruction sessions, 3 credit hour courses and instructional workshops). As a member of the library faculty, this position is responsible for achievement in librarianship, research and creative activity, and service. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program at time of hire. At least three years recent (within the past 4 years) and direct working experience with federal government information at the professional level. Experience providing reference service for government information including working with maps. Knowledge of current issues and practices in processing and cataloging federal government publications. Knowledge of the United States Federal Depository Library Program and depository library standards. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, presentation, written and oral communication skills. Preferred: Knowledge of emerging technologies in libraries and their applications for government information resources and services. Experience with spatial and numeric data services, particularly GIS. Demonstrated commitment to providing high quality public service. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and adapt to change. Teaching or training experience in a classroom setting. Supervisory experience. POSITION INFORMATION: This is a 9-month appointment, tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor. Salary range: $34,500 minimum, depending on qualifications.
