General C 3.134: Statistical Abstract of the United States (http://www.census.gov/stat_abstract) The place to start a search for government statistics. This book contains over 1500 statistical tables; in addition it can be used as an index to a multitude of government statistical sources, since it refers to the original source for much of its data. This is an annual publication and the Reynolds Library holds all editions back to the first published in 1879. The following titles are supplements to the Statistical Abstract. The County and City Data Book and State and Metropolitan Area Data Book contain much of the demographic data found in the Statistical Abstract broken down by respective geographic area. The Historical Statistics, as it name implies, contains tables of data covering the Colonial Period until the time of the latest edition of the Historical Statistics. A good Internet source for historical statistics is found at http://icg.harvard.edu/census. C 3.134/2:C 83/2 County and City Data Book C 3.134/2:H 62/ Historical Statistics of the United States C 3.134/5: State and Metropolitan Area Data Book Agriculture C 3.31/ : Census of Agriculture This quinquennial census contains statistics on various aspects of farming and agriculture in the United States, presented in geographical and subject series. A 1.47: Agricultural Statistics This annual publication presents statistics on crop and livestock production, as well as labor and other costs associated with farming, farm real estate, conservation programs, and forestry. A 1.38/2: Agriculture Fact Book The Fact Book contains information of interest to consumers and others including a section on "What Americans Eat" and "What a Dollar Spent on Food Paid For." Various aspects of agriculture are explored including a description of the US Department of Agriculture, and discussions of food safety and nutrition. Begin an Internet search for agricultural statistics using the USDA Economics & Statistics System at http://www.mannlib.cornell.edu/usda. Budget PREX 3.8: The Budget of the United States This multi-volume set describes the annual budget of the federal government. In most years the set contains the following volumes: The Budget-a summary of the President's budget proposal; Analytical Perspectives-intended to provide analysis of specific subject areas in order to place the budget in perspective; Appendix-a detailed description of the proposed budget, designed primarily for use by the Appropriations Committee; and Historical Tables-data on budget receipts, outlays, surpluses/deficits, and debt, generally for the time period 1940-2002. All of these volumes comprise the proposed budget; actual appropriations are made by Congress. PR 42.9: Economic Report of the President This report is transmitted to Congress every year and is accompanied by the Report of the Council of Economic Advisors. This report reflects the President's view of the economy in terms of production, trade, employment and other factors. The report includes statistical tables covering: national income and expenditure; population, employment, wages, and productivity; production and business activity; prices; money stock, credit, and finance; government finance; corporate profits and finance; agriculture; and, international statistics. Business, Commerce, Finance A major series in the area of business, commerce, and finance are the quinquennial Economic Censuses. These censuses are conducted every five years (in years ending 2 and 7) and give an overview of the segment of the economy covered. Crime/Criminal Justice J 1.14/7: Crime in the United States (Uniform Crime Reports) This annual report compiles statistics gathered from the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, a cooperative program of city, county, and state law enforcement agencies. Sections include: Crime Offenses Reported, Crime Offenses Cleared, Persons Arrested, Homicide Patterns, and Law Enforcement Personnel. This volume also contains the FBI's famous Crime Clock. J 29.9/6: Sourcebook of Criminal Justice This annual publication compiles statistics from a variety of sources covering crime and criminal justice in the United States. Sections include: Characteristics of the Criminal Justice System, Public Attitudes Toward Crime and Criminal Justice, Natrue and Distribution of Known Offenses, Characteristics and Distribution of Persons Arresetd, Judicial Processing of Defendants, and Persons Under Correctional Supervision. Demographics The major source for demographic information in the United States is the Decennial Census of Population and Housing. Every ten years the Census Bureau conducts a survey of the population and their data is published in various subject and geographic volumes. Only statistical data is reported; names of respondents are kept confidential and are not released until seventy years after the date of the census. Various data on population and housing and social and economic conditions broken down by various geographic levels and various subject factors can be found in these volumes. These data are updated in various monthly, quarterly, and annual publications. See our Census Publications handout for more information. C 3.223/ : Census of Population C 3.224/ : Census of Housing Begin searching for census data on the Internet using the Census Bureau's page at http://www.census.gov. Education ED 1.109: Condition of Education This annual production of the National Center for Education Statistics presents sixty indicators designed to give an overview of the current state of Education and some future trends. The sixty indicators are divided into six topical areas: Access, Participation, and Progress; Achievement, Attainment, and Curriculum; Economic and Other Outcomes of Education; Size, Growth, and Output of Educational Institutions; Climate, Classrooms, and Diversity in Educational Institutions; and Human and Financial Resources of Educational Institutions. ED 1.326: Digest of Education Statistics This annual publication aims to "provide a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education from kindergarten through graduate school." The data is drawn from many sources, but must be "nationwide in scope and of current interest and value" to be included. Some of the more interesting sections include: Opinions on Education, Volunteers, Schools and School Districts, and Student Activities and Behaviors. A good place to begin searching for education statistics on the Web is the National Center for Education Statistics' Web site (http://www.ed.gov/NCES.ncespub1.html) Employment/Labor L 2.3/5: Handbook of Labor Statistics This irregular publication gathers into one volume the major statistical data from various series produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. These data are updated in various series. Tables include: Labor Force, Employment and Unemployment; Occupational Employment Statistics; Employment and Wages; Productivity Data; Compensation Studies; Price and Living Conditions; Work Stoppage Statistics; Occupational Injuries and Illnesses; Foreign Labor Statistics; and Employee Benefits Studies. Topics covered include: Health Status and Determinants, Utilization of Health Resources, Health Care Resources, and Health Care Expenditures. HE 20.6210: Vital Statistics of the United States Annual publication presenting statistics on birth, death, marriage and divorce in the United States. HE 20.7009: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report Each week this publication provides several articles on targeted diseases (AIDS, Influenza, Salmonella) as well as tables of "Provisional Cases of Selected Notifiable Diseases" and "Deaths in U.S. Cities For the Week Ending . . ."
