Create a table showing the population of each state, 18 years and over, who consider themselves to be of Asian race alone.
2. Under PICK GEOGRAPHY, put a checkmark in the box next to STATE (field 040). This will automatically choose all states. If you click on the PLUS (+) next to 040, you will expand the list of states. The light gray checkmarks indicate they have all been chosen.
3. Click on the OUTPUT tab. The default OUTPUT is REPORT, an HTML file that limits your flexibility.
4. Click on the FILE box to change the OUTPUT to FILE. Then CLICK ON SAVE AS:
5. The resulting screen will list your file, even though you haven't finished it yet.
6. Click on the SIMPLE VARIABLES tab. Note that there is no way to search the subject of a table. To determine the table you want, you can consult the Summary File 1 Technical Documentation at http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2000/doc/sf1.pdf (Chapter 5 or 6) or the University of Michigan list at http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/census2/sf1tab.htm. You can also browse the tables on the lefthand side of the screen.
7. Click on the + next to the P Tables to expand.
8. Expand Table P5. Note that this table only includes age 18+. The race table for the entire population is P7.
9. Highlight P005006 with a single click. Then click on the SELECT button. Your variable should appear on the lefthand side of the screen. Then click on FINISH.
10. Click on OK to open the output file.
