5-Year Retention Policy Recommendations Developed

In 2004, the Superintendent of Documents convened an Ad Hoc Committee to Define Criteria for Disposal Prior to a 5 Year Retention. The Committee was charged with developing guidelines that would support implementation of a proposed amendment to the 44 USC 1911 and 1912, which would remove the mandates for selective depository libraries to retain all tangible depository items for a minimum of 5 years. The guidelines were intended to define criteria to be issued by the Superintendent of Documents for disposition of materials prior to the 5-year requirement if the legislative change was enacted. Although the amendment was not enacted, the recommendations of the Ad Hoc Committee are being utilized in a review of changes that could be made within the current statutory limitations.
