Source Materials and LEXIS

LEXIS

Academic Universe is a subset of the LEXIS on-line systems. LEXIS has two on-line systems

Academic Access (the on-line version in the Graduate Library and Public Health) is more complete for some newspapers and state bills.

Congressional Universe (http://web.lexis-nexis.com/congcomp/) is more complete for federal legislation and regulations.

Source Materials

Use the Source button at the top of individual library/form screens of Academic Universe to obtain a list of materials indexed by that section.

Content is listed under the Source button of Academic Universe. The Congressional Information Service web site has an alphabetic list of titles, an alphabetic list of search forms, and additions/deletions since July 1999. The URL is: http://cisweb.lexis-nexis.com/marketsource/reports.htm.

Arrangement

General Arrangement

Academic Universe is arranged into eighteen search segments, called Search Forms. These are the equivalent to Libraries in Academic Access and the Education Program.

Source Lists within most of the Search Forms further narrow the type of material being searched, such as Major Newspapers, Supreme Court Decisions, or Aerospace Industry News. These are equivalent to Files in Academic Access and the Education Program. The Source Lists are usually chosen through a pull-down menu.

Search Form Content (Subject Files)

See Individual Search Form Descriptions at the end of this guide for additional information and search strategies.

Search Strategies

Search Boxes

Most Search Forms (subject areas) have several boxes

Keyword Searching

Keyword searching uses Boolean logic, proximity indicators, and truncation symbols. It picks up keywords in the title, lead paragraphs and list of index terms if the latter are available. It does not pick up words in the entire article. To retrieve words in the rest of the article, use keyword searching in the Additional Terms box.
Boolean Logic AND bank AND deregulate finds both words in the same document
OR doctor OR physician finds either word in same document
AND NOT Titanic AND NOT movie finds first word without the second
ATLEASTn (term) atleast5 (budget) finds term number of times
allcaps (AIDS) finds AIDS but not aids
nocaps (mace) finds mace but not MACE
Proximity Indicators PHRASE SEARCHING buying power retrieves two words together
W/n economic growth w/3 indicators retrieves phrase within three words of indicators
e.g. economic growth indicators or indicators of economic growth
W/p pakistan w/p nuclear retrieves words in same paragraph
W/s pakistan w/s nuclear retrieves words in same sentence
PRE/n william pre/2 clinton retrieves first word within two of second word
Not W/n Michigan not/w10 university retrieves farther appart than 10
Not W/s Clinton not w/2 Yeltsin retrieves words not in same sentence
Not W/p Clinton not w/p Yeltsin Retrieves words if not in same paragraph
Not PRE/n University not pre/2 Michigan retrieves if one word not in front of other
Truncation Symbol Asterisk * replaces one character anywhere in word except first letter wom*n retrieves woman or women
Exclamation Point ! replaces one or more character at end of word child! retrieves child or children or childhood
