Gary Marple
Postdoctoral Researcher - Department of Mathematics - University of Michigan

About Me - I'm a postdoctoral assistant professor in the Mathematics Department at the University of Michigan. I grew up in both Colorado Springs and Cañon City, Colorado. For my PhD, I worked on developing fast algorithms for simulating red blood cells. This research utilized cutting edge numerical methods for solving differential equations and resulted in the development of a new state-of-the-art fast algorithm for solving Stokes’ and Laplace’s equations inside complex geometries with periodic boundary conditions. As a postdoc, I've been focusing more on problems involving machine learning. I'm currently working on a project in collaboration with the Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC). The goal of the project is to use machine learning techniques to quickly construct mobility maps using data that is generated by running computationally intensive, physics-based simulations of off-road vehicles traversing various soil conditions.
