I am also a faculty associate and on the Steering Committee for the University of Michigan Center for World Performance Studies and a faculty associate and on the Executive Committee of the Center for Russian and East European Studies.

 

I am married to Allan Gibbard, and my sons are Stephen and George Gibbard.  My sister Maria Genné directs an intergenerational dance company Kairos Dance Theater in Minneapolis.

 

I do research in Dance History, and have written numerous articles, essays, and pieces of criticism. I have also written a book on Dame Ninette de Valois, The Making of a Choreographer: Ninette de Valois and Bar aux Folies-Bergere (Society of Dance History Scholars, Studies in Dance History Series, 1996) distributed by University of Wisconsin Press. My research interests include George Balanchine, British ballet, dance in the American film musical, and Javanese dance. I play in the Javanese gamelan Venerable Lake of Honey at the University of Michigan.
