Too Cool

My first meeting with Liz was during Junior year when she was of the trio Cindy, Liz, and Eva that would come down, every now and then, to the stage after school. Why I was there was because work had to be done on the school production (Sing!). Anna and Linda also worked on the tech crew, and it would be these two that Liz, Eva, and Cindy would come on down to find, asking if they'd like to see a movie or hang out or kick little kids or something, I didn't pay too much attention. In any case, I got to know some names and maybe a face or two, but it was toward the end of the year, that it all began to come together with the annual trek to see Shakespere in the Park with Ben and Linda and Anna and others and a few more names were traded and the whatnot.

Junior year was when I suppose I got to know Liz a little better but, it was mostly a I knew who she was and I thought she knew who I was sort of thing for the most part until the end when SING came due and the celebrations over the old school and the moving into the new school had begun in earnest.

Upon second recollection I do recall her being part of the group that would constantly go out to the park next to the old Stuy and draw in the chalk as I'd eat chicken nuggets and bum around in general. In any case, I got to know her pretty well because it was over the summer that we all started going out in massive raiding parties to enjoy a bit and piece of our summer vacation. There was a concert in the park. There was more Shakspere in the Park. There was FAO and trolling around the Parthenon, as we liked to call it.

In the end there was plenty for us to do together that by the time the new school year, senior year, rolled around we had formed a somewhat coherent group of friends. Hanging in the park after school, going to UNO's for food on the cheap, or at leat as cheap as we could make it at UNO's, hanging about doing nothing quite special in general after school, or even during school during the lunch breaks we had. it was a relaxing time and Liz was pretty busy getting me into trouble every now and then.

For example, there was a time when we all were hanging out in the auditorium together and watching the SING rehersals that the SophFrosh were doing, and Liz dared me to heckle. Well, me lacking all survival instincts, did so and nearly got myself kicked out of the auditorium for the day by the boys and girls whom I felt had no right calling the kettle Black. In any case Liz is a bucketload of fun in that sick and twisted way and I don't suppose it should be otherwise. For if not, who would I have to constantly crush on the sidewalk. Which in itself a good story to tell since Liz was the main victim of all of our childish playing around.

It had begun with a typical day after school. Myself, Anna, and Linda and a few others, I forget here and there, had decided to walk from school to the 59th street train station where the others would catch the train to Queens and myself back uptown to home. This was no small task, a 4 mile hike, and since it was still fall it didn't seem like a terrible thing to do. So we embarked, and midway through the lower numbers, around 4th street I'd guess if not lower, between Chinatown and the Villiage, is where it happenned. I happenned to be walking on the sidewalk, and in the opossing direction was this woman. I had finally decided in my mind that I was not going to constantly dive out of the way of oncoming pedestrian traffic simply to be nice.

So I pressed forward. In the end, my shoulder hit her shoulder with a lot more force then I thought. To me it barely felt like a touch and I'm a pretty big wimp, but she flew like I was a truck. For the next 2 miles the everybody just kept ribbing me about how I clocked some stranger and didn't even notice. In any case somewhere along the trip it translated into me and somebody else sneaking up alongside one of the bunch and then randomly smashing them between our shoulders. And we all traded turns at this for the rest of the year. But mostly we did it to Liz 'cause she never noticed. Certainly the last time I did it was on Liz, and I think we all achieved some level physical damage.

But don't think you can do this anymore to Liz, she's made it quiteclear she'll kick your ass if you try, and I've got some bruises to prove she means it.

As for recent, she's finished up her undergraduate degree at Boston University, and I suspect she's part of the med school student crowd over at Brooklyn College, but that's just speculation.
