Resort to War

"Monumental in its treatment and exhaustive in its scope, Resort to War is certainly a remarkable achievement.... Such a high level of detail combined with keen scholarly analysis make this a must-have for academic collections concerned with war in the modern world." — Brian Odom

Resort to War, the most recent handbook for the Correlates of War Project, identifies the wars that took place across the world, 1816-2007. Herein, war is understood as sustained combat involving substantial casualties, resulting in 1,000 or more annual battle deaths. Six-hundred and fifty-four wars are categorized as either inter-state, extra-state, intra-state, or non-state. For each war, a narrative is provided alongside relevant data. In overview sections, statistical trends are examined to portray the shifting significance of war in the modern era.

Shedding new light on these matters, Resort to War is the definitive source for the Correlates of War Project, and its definitions of core concepts: the state, membership in the sovereign state system, war, war participance, and the four mutually exclusive and exhaustive types of war (inter-state, extra-state, intra-state, and non-state). The book concludes with a reflection on the current state of our knowledge about war.
