The following are the required texts for EDUC 222:

  • Gee, J. P. (2007). What videogames have to teach us about learning and literacy. New York: Palgrave Macmillan.
  • Collins, A., & Halverson, R. (2009) Rethinking education in the age of technology. New York: Teachers College Press.
  • Card, O.S. (1977) Ender's Game. New York: Starscape)
  • A videogame of your choice*
  • A coursepack (may be purchased at Dollar Bill, 611 Church Street)
  • Individual readings will be made available online via CTools

*Some videogames that might be a good choice for
you:
  • Pirates of the Burning Sea
  • World of Warcraft
  • Civilization
  • Roller Coaster Tycoon
  • Spore
  • Bioshock
  • The Sims
  • Mario Games (the whole lot of ‘em)
  • Age of Empires
  • Rock Band

What game will you choose? Note that you will write a short paper justifying your game choice (details to come on the first day of class). The professor will approve all choices based on the justification you make in the paper, so
wait to buy your game for class until you get this approval. (Of course, if you just want to buy a cool new game and use this class as the excuse, I won’t tell anyone.)
