The plan today was to move the refrigerator down to the basement, remove the old wallpaper, cabinets and appliances, and pull up the old flooring. Possibly start removing the half wall by the front door and the stub wall by the wall opening. There were concerns about how long removing the wallpaper would take, since if it had been put on badly it might be very hard to remove. Ironically, the wallpaper came off easily - it's the flooring that proved problematic. It turns out there were three layers of flooring to pull up - which explains why my ceiling seemed to be lower than the standard eight feet. To make matters worse, whoever put down the top layer didn't use flooring staples. Instead he used nails of varying lengths and types - some were three inches long! This is what is known as overkill, and turned what should have taken a couple of hours into a job that was only half done by the end of the day. The refrigerator was moved, though, all the appliances and cabinets came out, and some of the wallpaper was removed.

The hole where the gas range used to be. I never knew there was a plug back there. The old range, over by the back door.

Removing the lower cabinets. Another view of the cabinet removal. The pipes are where the sink used to be.

Pulling up the top layer of flooring. The yellow flooring in the background is the second layer. Most of the top flooring did not come up this easily. A view of the kitchen, once all the cabinets have been removed. Some of the wall around the plumbing has been removed - since the new sink will be in the corner, the plumbing will have to be moved.

A view of the multiple layers of flooring. The old sink and countertop. Much like the new countertop will be, it's all one piece of laminate.
