Day 314
Okay, I need to regroup. Can I do that? Or is that a strictly plural
activity? Geez, Ari, see what I mean? Anyway, whatever it is, here it
is. Yesterday started fine, in the sense that nothing happened which was
truly upsetting and unexpected. Sure I had to wait for an awfully long
time, but I said my piece, and she encouraged me to leave. I'm not
certain what the problem with her servants seems to be, but the one chap
was certainly most helpful. Okay, so nothing, as I said, occurred oddly,
which is to say that I say no reason to deviate from my precautionary
measures. Once the soldiers who were sparring with Usires noticed me,
they made every effort to hasten my discussion with him. They probably
wished to let me conclude my business so that they might return to their
practice. Anyway, he agreed, after I plied him with food, that magic is
good in and of itself but very, very bad if it's in your enemy's hand. So
today, we set out to accomplish my goal. Only, you see, it wasn't quite
that simple, as this is the beginning of the weirdness and all. So before
we leave Arden, Random's Trumping me to return to the castle, and
eventually that's what happens. I guess that's why he's king and I'm not.
Not that I'd want it. I don't even like being on the surface, much less
the thought of ruling it. I think everyone in Amber should just jump in a
lake. It might loosen them up a bit. Um, so I find myself in a room with
Julian, whose wardrobe seems a bit less practical than his reputation
might suggest. Now that's strange enough, but the mind bender is when he
says he's Barnabas. Okay, see, the thing is that Barnabas is my dad, my
real dad, from Chaos, and... Okay, so the important thing here is that
I'm standing there with a person who's come all that way, and I never
noticed he wasn't there. Mortally embarrassed by the lack of etiquette
for dealing with this, I say "Hi" and flee into Shadow with Usires, who
does a really quick job of finding volcanoes. As much as he complained
about the heat, I've gotta kind of wonder how he knew where to find them.
But that's why I wanted him along, 'cause he knew Shadow far better than I
do, and besides he's big, and Dad did say that the Hendrakes were looking
for Jesbys, and well I guess I'm kind of one. Um. But originally I just
thought I could use some help. I didn't see the need to worry him about
Dad's troubles until after we'd achieved our objective, and I'd conducted
some really cool experiments that took awhile because I sort of didn't
have a magic item which I wanted to melt down. Usires held onto his axe
pretty tightly throughout. So anyway, this is where it got downright
bizarre, because the Hendrakes attacked us. Okay, so that could probably
have been expected, but the thing is that they were using a Jesby to
attack us, and moreover that Jesby turned out to be my grandfather,
Bartleby... You know, I think I'm picking up on a trend, here....
Anyway, I used a few Xenos and they kind of gave up and left. I think
Usires was disgusted that he didn't really get to beat on them, so maybe
the next time I get us into a tight spot I should let him have some fun.
So long as I can prevent injury on our side, I guess that's only fair.
Um. So anyway, Bartleby is talking to Mother, and she kept giving me
these looks that make my insides crawl, so I've made my excuses and gone
to bed. I think maybe I'll just stay here for a while until the universe
settles down.
