He takes it in the hall. Meantime, must ever-body sleeps. ooh. Our adventure begins at five in the morning, as Laughter decides to beat the sun, and as many zombies as time (or Fiona) will allow. Jubal wakes up two hours later and makes sure his spell is hung. It is, and well besides. I guess some people eat or something. They break fast. Gee, basketball is taking over ever-thing innit? Ten, of the clock, rolls around and so do Ulysses and Sandr, though not together as of yet. The day will come. Jubal borrows a mirror from Flora. Vanity has its uses. hmm. My notes indicate that Sandr actually woke at nine thirty, feeling weird. No comment. Cameron startles someone, but it all happens out of our mutual ken. Random sends Cameron to summon the family, the Trump being inoperative for the purpose. Ulysses gathers up Sandr and Archimedes, and they have a lot of fun running the wheelchair up and down the hall, making "vroom" noises. Jubal gets Trumped and learns that Corwin's been aced, as his alleged father falls to the floor before him. He decides to remove his attention from the mirror. ("No, dammit! My chin can't be that big!") People assemble in the Great Hall, the Okay Hall being unsuitable for the occassion. Fiona and Laughter attend, as do Caine and Cameron. It's a family thing. The Chaos thing explains: things fall apart, the center cannot hold. Or, when you live next to a monumental hole in the ground, you gotta expect lotsa shit. Like Sandr, apparently, who is something of a messiah to the Courts. Man, is they desparate. Random sets Fiona and Bleys to research, Caine and Julian to defense, Gerard to tending Corwin, Flora to catering the campaign, Llewella to making waves, Benedict to go missing for plot furtherance, and the younger generation to hanging around until something horrible occurs. Like lemmings to the sea, so go the days of our lives, infirmary bound from instinctual need. Sandr explores the shallows of Corwin's mind, while Jubal stops his dad from bleeding. Strangely, Sphincter-boy detects the presence of a Chaos mind! The ensuing headache, Jubal will hold against him for a time. More like, he'll resent Random, who makes him cast his spell for the edification of all, and the mortification of his own flesh, courtesy of Sequence. (Who later becomes a Dworkian Knot. Coincidence?) We learn: Jubal's mom was Adrian, his teacher Tianin, his first puppy Patch, his favorite food jerky, and the King is a weinie. At least Jubal refrains from stating this, only saying that he will one day rule Amber. Sandr picks up the thread, though, and Ulysses picks him up off the floor soon after. Laughter takes a shower. Random tells them to rest up and take their vitamins, 'cause they get to deal with whatever's preventing Benedict's arrival. Ulysses would rather die, so he has the Pattern take him to Dworkin. Laughter follows, figuring that of course whatever nailed Laughing Boy won't hurt her at all. She recovers several artifact points in the process. Meantime, Jubal heals his comprades on the sound assumption that they will absorb much more damage that way. They learn that their number has dwindled before they've even left Amber. So, naturally, they go to Dworkin's lab in Chaos, figuring to hasten the process. Sadly, Random and Bleys accompany them, and their retrieval mission is successful. Sorry Joe, back in line. Back in Amber, Ulysses continues to separate himself from his mother. A lengthy, pointless discussion of the situation ensues. Sandr presents his theories on the Pattern, and Bleys and Random nod politely. Fiona arrives and reveals that the reason there was no Pattern in Corwin's mind is that there was nothing there.
