Actually made it to breakfast. Ulysses pounds on the door and informs me that the trump don't work. I have to agree upon staring at one of the many cards he tosses into my lap. I follow he and Sandr until Cameron shows up and says Random wants us all in the main hall. The puppet government has fallen in Chaos (big surprise?). House Hendrake (whatever that is) is now in charge and hell-bent on attacking Amber. Random wants us all on hand in case he thinks of something for us to do. He's already sent all of his brothers and sisters off on errands of their own. I'm not sure what he's trying to prove. I'm blaming it on the stress of the situation for now. We head to the infirmary where Corwin bleeds unnaturally. Jubal makes a blood image of himself which Random makes him question in front of all of us. That lacked all tact. Especially when this image seemed to represent an absence in Jubal's memory (which explains a lot). The name of our opponent was revealed, as well as that of Jubal's mother. Thankfully, Jubal was able to wind up the questioning shortly after that. I hope he gets the chance to recast the spell in private. I sure as hell wouldn't want an audience for my past. Random gives us the afternoon to prepare. We're to find Benedict in shadow, since the trumps aren't working. Hope we find him before army Hendrake finds us. Sandr is not happy with the situation and notes his displeasure loudly. I suggest to Jubal that since Random is making him go with us, we might as well have him whole. Random over hears and eliminates the potentiality of the idea. By the time Jubal and I get to him, he's out of his head with pain. The more I observe him, the more Sandr reminds me of a dog that's been beat too much. Didn't stop me from enjoying it when Random decked him later on that evening, but the little prick really deserved it then, considering the situation. Add that Laughter and Ulysses had disappeared by this point. Random had to call Bleys back to help us track them down. Apparently Ulysses had gone looking for Dworkin and Laughter had gone looking for him. Hey presto, they all end up unconscious in the same area. Sequence was the only casualty. I was in the process of explaining that to her when Ulysses proved that not only did he lack tact, but had no sense of timing either. I hit him twice for his stupidity. I guess I'm a bit stressed too. I doubt he'll hold it against me, and if he does, such is life. Sandr does have some interesting ideas on the Pattern. Can't say as I was ever interested in the damn thing. It gave me freedom when I needed it, but I haven't given it much thought since, or at least until Laughter brought it up the other day. It's all way beyond me, and I don't feel bad for it. We're to resume our search for Benedict in the morning. I don't believe I've felt this cheery since sitting in a trench at Verdun. At least fighting is something I can understand...
