The Big Laboratory Model

People freely and frequently meet face to face to consider matters of common intellectual interest. Teaching and research become interwoven components of a single, communal activity.

In a networked computing environment, people can freely and frequently meet to consider matters of common intellectual interest. The more an instructor relies on such an environment, the more likely it is that the instructor becomes not "the sage on the stage" or just "the guide on the side" but "a hand in the band" often guiding (as manager), sometimes working (as member), and always supporting (as resource).
