Two methods for acquiring bookmark links from Eric Rabkin

Note: "Bookmarks" in Netscape Communicator are the same as "Favorites" in Internet Explorer: stored pointers to selected locations on the Web.

Piecemeal method

  1. Open the "bookmark links" file in a new browser window so that these instructions remain visible. For Windows users, do this by moving the cursor over "bookmarks links" at the top of this page, clicking the right mouse button so that a shortcut menu appears, and choosing the Open in New Window option. For Mac users, do this by moving the cursor over "bookmarks links" at the top of this page, holding down the mouse button until a shortcut menu appears, and choosing the Open in New Window option. For all users, if necessary, drag the new window by its title bar so that you can click between the new window and this window.
  2. As you visit these links, add any of them one at a time to your bookmarks menu using the Bookmarks|Add Bookmark command in Netscape or the Favorites|Add to Favorites... command in Internet Explorer.
  3. In Netscape, use the Bookmarks|Edit Bookmarks command to open your Bookmarks window and there edit your bookmark menu by deleting, renaming, or rearranging bookmarks. In Internet Explorer, use the Favorites|Organize Favorites... command to open a dialogue box that allows for deleting, renaming, or rearranging favorites.

All-at-once method

  1. Download the whole bookmark file to your own machine. For Windows users, do this by moving the cursor over "bookmarks links" at the top of this page, clicking the right mouse button so that a shortcut menu appears, and choosing the Save Link As option in Netscape or the Save Target As option in Internet Explorer. For Mac users, do this by moving the cursor over "bookmarks links" at the top of this page, holding down the mouse button until a shortcut menu appears, and choosing the Save option. For all users, accept the filename Bookmarks.html or give the download file any other name you choose.
  2. For Netscape, use Netscape's Bookmarks|Edit Bookmarks command to open the Bookmarks window. Then, either (a) use the File|Import command to add the downloaded file to your existing bookmarks file, or (b) use the File|Open command to make the downloaded file your active bookmark file.
(Note: If you Open--rather than Import--the downloaded bookmarks file, you will not affect your previously existing bookmarks file. To make your previous bookmarks file active again, use the File|Open command and navigate to your previous file. Its name and location vary according to the version of browser and operating system you are using. It is usually called something like "Bookmarks" [Mac] or "bookmark.htm" [Windows] and is usually found within the User directory within the Netscape Preferences folder [Mac] or Netscape Program directory [Windows].)
For Internet Explorer, use the File|Import and Export... command to open an import wizard. Choose to Import Favorites from a file and browse to the file you just downloaded. Follow the instructions in the wizard.
  3. Edit your bookmark menu by deleting, renaming, and/or rearranging bookmarks using the instructions from step 3 above.
