i've been sick.
everyone's been sick.
some people say it's the high pollen count.



i've never had allergies.








the other day i had a sharp sore throat. then the next day i was super tired. then the next day i was raspy, and it was like i had a runny nose, but coming out of my eyes instead.
it was really gross. good thing i was assistant teaching that day for a lecture about the performance artist Orlan. She achieved much media attention in the early 90's with her broadcasted plastic surgery footage, but lately she's been getting quite a bit of film work in europe.
her lecture and the deline of my physical being seemd to be thematically tied together somehow.

the ann arbor film festival went up this weekend. it was really great to watch an audience watch the films we had watched and argued over.
there were a ton of people there, and many installations installed in the theater.












this is a picture of the freesstyle (slam poetry? which is it?) act that went on before the 7 and 930pm shows.




i dont think they knew that most of the audience from the 7pm stayed to watch the 930 show, as three of the four songs the performed they repeated later.

oh well, mix it up, right? right.

then someone showed me the way to get to the green room, where there were free drinks and snacks (snacks!)

this was the best part of the festival for me.

my sister was here visiting this weekend. last nite we went to see my friend kathy's art show at Izzy's Raw Art Bar.

















while there, i met this guy named maurice who performed a puppetshow later that nite at the Zeitgeist.













then this morning i took my sister early early to the airport to go back home. here she is, so sleepy. wake up sleeping beauty wake up...

today is my birthday! my friend matt put candles in my birthday cake and got everyone to sing for me. what a nice night.

the show went really well this past weekend.

the venue was beautiful.













we could look through the peephole from backstage and watch as the audience filled up the seats (I got so nervous that I couldnt watch anymore!)














my friend mbala told me that wayang kulit shows are very different in terms of scale - that they were not intended for human audiences, but for the gods.


































and all the mythic characters are legendary, recognized by everyone who attends.

after the show i felt very emotional. almost so happy, but also very weepy.









i dont usually feel like that about the work i do, directing or acting or otherwise. there was something more to this, i think.










my friend rich says that there is magic in indonesia. no, for real - magic.
sometimes i think that art is my religion.
but - isnt that a wierd place to put art? or religion? or me?

Also, if you are in Ann Arbor on Sunday at 5, come see Dancing Shadows, a wayang sandosa shadow puppet show I am in, directed by Sigit Sabdoprijono. From our rehearsals last nite, the show is shaping up pretty well.

My friends Tatsia and Kelly like to go to the airport and watch the planes landing and taking off.














While we were out there the other night, there was a blackout – all the lights around us went out. But the lights at the airport stayed on.














You could look up in the sky and see the planes lined up for miles, waiting to come in and land.
All those people waiting to arrive – or to complete their journey of getting away. Lots of coming and going.










































My friend Ikuko uses her hands a lot when she talks. I think they are the most expressive part of her body.

What was it I said? “You float around for too long, and you start to look for your tethers.” Yeah.

I wouldd hafta say that if I had to pick a soup for san Francisco, California, it would have to be clam chowder in a bread basket.





































But that being said, theres a lot of good food here.
