tonite we had a party for marta's return and nicole's birthday. i made a cake shaped like a chicken, but forgot to take a photo until it was almost gone-! if you look hard, you can see the frosting outline of the body. (Kat saw it and said "That's supposed to be a chicken?") but it got almost entirely eaten, so i suppose the visuals weren't too distracting. red velvet cake is a hit yet again. big thing in the south. but i never had it until i moved away from the south.






















also, dalang sigit soeitos came out as well, and at one point the dance floor morphed into a multi-person shadow puppet experiment.





















sigit did a shadow puppet show last month, with a large gamelan orchestra and singers accompanying him















but no other puppeteers. traditionally, i think dalang's run the show. like a one-man band. even though they will play several characters at the same time.





one time i was meeting with sigit and one of the singers walked into the room, early for her rehearsal. she saw sigit and said 'hello my dalang'. i always thought that was so beautiful - the greeting, the trust, the acknowledgement, the respect. look at this picture of her, doesn't she look so serious and focused? trying to get it right, for her dalang?

























i wonder if the pressure ever gets to him - if he ever feels like everyone's waiting for him. to see what he'll do, what he's made of.
