According to Paul Machiele of the
Environmental Protection Agency: “This awesome picture was taken with a digital
camera in the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana
on August 6, 2000, by John McColgan, a fire behavior
analyst from Fairbanks, Alaska. Since he was working when he took
the picture, he cannot sell or profit from it so he should at least be
recognized as the photographer of this once in a lifetime shot.”
Ice: This
came from a Rig Manager for Global Marine Drilling in St. Johns, Newfoundland.
In this particular case the water was calm and the sun was almost directly
overhead so that the diver was able to get into the water and click this
picture. They estimated the weight at 300,000,000 tons.
