Bar Codes for Work...

First used commercially at a Marsh's grocery store in Troy, OH in the early '70's, bar codes are now being adopted throughout industry. The technology has two primary benefits for capturing data: 1) SPEED and 2) ACCURACY. Applications include inventory control, WIP, asset management, and tool tracking.

There are two distinct types of bar codes, one being a linear bar code. This is essentially a license plate number that refers to a larger data base. The most commonly used linear code in industry is Code 39. Click on the image below to learn more about this symbology....

The second type of machine readable code is Two-dimensional. This image, which looks like a scrambled checkerboard, is a portable database that can store 25 to 100 times more information than a conventional linear bar code. Bar Codes for Pleasure....

Bars are also good for other things besides tracking parts...like enjoying a cold beverage. Below are a few of the bars in Ann Arbor along with my "coding" of them (5 beers being the best, 1 the worst....)

Connor O'Neill's

318 S. Main St.

Serving the finest pint of Guiness west of County Cork. Don't miss Trivia Night every Monday evening.

The Earle

121 W. Washington St.

This dungeon-like bar is extremely classy. You might want to forgo the beer here and order up an 18 year old scotch.

Mitch's Place

1301 S. University

Quite simply, the best campus bar in town.

Casey's

300 Depot St.

Don't feel like waiting for a table a the Gandy Dancer? Try this bar just down the block for a burger and a beer.

Ricks

Church St.

If you are into lots of frat boys, ear-splitting music and stupid pick-up lines then Ricks is the place for you!

Tiger Stadium

The Corner of Michigan & Trumbull

I never let the pathetic Tiger pitching ruin my favorite beer drinking spot - in the bleachers on a sunny afternoon. Click here to see more on the Detroit Nine....
