Houston's Galleria / Uptown area is the city's premiere shopping district, Houston's main fashion center and home to many of greater Houston's finest hotels, restaurants and night spots. It also is a bustling business district that is larger than the downtowns of most big cities. The Galleria / Uptown commercial district also is home to some of Houston's most impressive architecture.

The Galleria / Uptown area is located in the western part of the city, only about six miles west of downtown Houston and just outside of the 610 Loop. Whether you call this part of town the Galleria area or Uptown (Houstonians use both terms), the district shares its name with a shopping mall.
Galleria-Area Shopping
The venerable Galleria (THE Galleria) is one of the largest shopping malls in the country with more than 3 million square feet of space featuring a large roster of luxury shopping destinations.
Built in 1970, the Galleria long has been Houston's premiere shopping spot and, with more than 25 million visitors annually, is considered the city's most popular attraction.
The nearby Uptown Park Shopping Mall is relatively new. Fashioned like a European village, Uptown Park has fountains, restaurants and shops such as Longoria Collection, Runway Fashion Boutique and BBI Classic.
Houston's 'other' downtown
The area surrounding these malls is a thriving commercial center. The borders of the Uptown Business District are fairly well established (the West Loop on the east, Woodway to the north, Interstate 59 to the south and Yorktown Street to the west). When people say "Galleria area" they often are referring to a much wider expanse that includes the businesses lining a number of major thoroughfares and freeways, including 610, I-59, Westheimer Road, Richmond Street, San Felipe and Post Oak Boulevard. The larger Galleria area includes many of the popular bars and restaurants that line Richmond and Westheimer that, strictly speaking, would not be considered part of the Uptown Business District proper.
The Uptown district is home to approximately 2,000 companies, represents 11 % of Houston's office space and is comparable in size to the downtowns of Pittsburgh, Seattle or Denver. Houston's Uptown Business District is the 17th largest business district in the country.
