Houstonians love to shop, and shopping is a top attraction for visitors to the city. Forbes magazine may have discovered why shopping is such a big deal here. In Forbes' first ever-ranking of the best American cities for shopping, Houston came in first. You can read more about why Houston shopping topped the list here, but we can tell you now that The Galleria, with its "2.5 million square feet of retail pleasure," had a little something to do with it.
With nearly 400 stores, The Galleria is the largest shopping mall in Texas and one of the largest in the country. Since it was built in 1970, the Galleria has been the premiere shopping destination for the greater Houston area and is considered Houston's most popular attraction for tourists. As singular as the Galleria Mall is, however, it is only one reason why the Galleria / Uptown district is such a shopper's paradise. The Galleria houses an impressive lineup of fashion boutiques as well as five anchor department stores, but the surrounding area is filled with luxury boutiques and stores as well. The allure of those top-quality boutiques and others like them throughout Houston played a huge role in the city's ranking in Forbes. Westheimer Road, Post Oak and the Galleria area's other major thoroughfares are lined with stores of all types.
Here, in a nutshell, are three reasons why the Galleria area is such a shopping magnet (Click on the links for more mall information and to see a map):
• The Galleria Mall
• Uptown Park
• Highland Park Village
