David W. Eby
Dr. David W. Eby is an Associate Research Scientist in the Social and Behavioral Analysis Division of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) where he has been working since 1993. Dr. Eby earned his B.A. (1984), M.A. (1988) and Ph.D. (1991), all in psychology, from theUniversity of California, Santa Barbara. He completed his training with a postdoctoral position in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.

Prior to joining UMTRI, Dr. Eby held adjunct faculty positions in the psychology departments at Western Washington University and California State University, San Bernardino. He has also been a research associate at Anacapa Sciences, Inc.

His two main research interests are 1) traffic safety, where he has conducted studies on occupant protection, speed-enforcement, elderly drivers, and the primary prevention of drunk driving; and 2) Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), where he has conducted large-scale evaluations of prototype navigation assistance systems, use of ITS by age group and gender, and tourist applications of ITS. Prior to UMTRI, Dr. Eby conducted basic research on the processes underlying perceptions of depth and motion.

Dr. Eby belongs to several professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association , the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society , the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology , the Travel and Tourism Research Association, ITS America , the University of Michigan Substance Abuse Center , the Society for Research in Child Development , the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine , and the Michigan Safety Belt Coalition.
