WinSock FTP

in the University of Michigan Computing Environment

Caveats, requirements, and disclaimers

  1. This is recommended only for people using Windows '95. Windows 3.1 and 3.11 users should use Lan WorkPlace and Rapid Filer.
  2. If you're using Windows '95 and a modem, you should install Dial-Up Networking, and configure it for the University of Michigan Computing Environment first. That can be done using the QuickNote S4203: Configuring Windows 95 for Dialing In to a NAS. You can get that QuickNote at any of the major computing sites.
  3. Before using this document to set up and use Winsock FTP, you must be dialed into the University of Michigan Computing Environment, if you're using a modem.

  4. You now have a copy of WinSock FTP on your machine. But, you're not done quite yet. You've still got things to do!

How to install WinSock FTP

  1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  2. Double click on the Hard Disk in the window that comes up. The Hard Disk should have (C:) in the name.
  3. Double click on the wsftp folder icon in the window that comes up.
  4. Double click on the "Ws_ftp32-um" icon that shows up. (It may be called "Ws_ftp32-um.exe".)
At this point, it should expand a bunch of files in a window. When "FINISHED" appears at the top of the window, the window should disappear. If it doesn't disappear, feel free to close it with the X button in the upper right corner.
  5. WinSock FTP is now installed. You can throw the "Ws_ftp32-um" icon that you just clicked on in the Recycle Bin if you would like to get it out of the way.

How to Use WinSock FTP

  1. Double click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  2. Double click on the Hard Disk in the window that comes up. The Hard Disk should have (C:) in the name.
  3. Double click on the wsftp folder icon to get to WinSock FTP.
  4. Double click on the Ws_ftp32 icon. This icon has FTP in blue and white letters, and a plug on it. It should look a lot like the small pictures at the top of this page.
  5. This brings up WinSock FTP, and a session profile. There are three configured by default; they are:
    1. um-ifs: A connection to ftp.ifs.umich.edu, the IFS ftp server.
    2. um-login: A connection to the login servers. If you have a login.itd.umich.edu subscription through the UMCE, this is the quickest session to use.
    3. um-login-sph: A sample session set up to go to the School of Public Health's file space through the login.itd.umich.edu servers.
  6. Select a session profile from the list, click on the "UserID" field, and enter your uniqname in that field.
  7. Click on the OK button.
  8. When it prompts you for a password, type in your uniqname password.
  9. Next, you should see the WS_FTP32 window, with the remote files on the right, and the local files (on your hard disk) on the left. At the bottom is the file type. Normally, it should be on binary, but if you're transferring a file that ends with ".TXT", you should change it to ASCII. You can also leave this setting on "Automatic", in which case, WS_FTP will almost always get the file type right.
  10. Other things that can be done here...
  11. To quit WinSock FTP, just click on the "Exit" button at the bottom.

Note: If you're using dial-up networking, and you're done with that connection, you may also want to close the connection to the NAS at this point. Email online.consulting@umich.edu if you have problems.
