Pretend to Be an Australian!
If you've always dreamed of visiting the land down under, but can't afford the crazy price of a plane ticket,
or you can't stomach the 14-hour flight over the Pacific-- no worries, mate! You can get a taste of it right from your own home!
DISCLAIMER: This completely tongue-in-cheek activity is intended to simulate the experiences of jet-lagged Americans in their first few days in Australia and it is in no way intended to be insulting to Australians who are not pretending.
ANOTHER DISCLAIMER: Neither I, nor Australia, nor the Australians jointly or severally accept responsibility for loss of sleep, cash, property, life, or dignity if you are silly enough to try these.
- Next time someone asks for your birthdate, give it to them in "correct" abbreviated order (day/month/year), then apologize and give it in the traditional American order.
- Set your watch 16 hours ahead if you live in Michigan or on the East Coast, 17 hours ahead if you live in Central Time Zone, or 19 hours ahead if you live on the West Coast. Don't forget to set the date ahead to tomorrow!
- Change the settings on all your weather reports so that you only get it in Celsius. Try to figure out what to wear outside today-- no fair testing the weather outside before you get dressed!
- Using crayons and scissors, cut small holes in your cash and color the bills in shades of red, blue, and purple. Subtract one-quarter to one-third the face value of your bills and voila! Australian money!
- Sit in the passenger's seat of your car, then take it for a drive, keeping to the left in two-way traffic, of course! If you can, place mini-traffic circles in all the city intersections.
- **THIS IS THE CONTEST** Take the Australian grocery list in the "Week One: 8 February 2005" entry and "translate" it into American for D and Chad.
