day 4: jamacia

we go to a shopping plaza. everyone said "no problem, mon" and was laid back. they have mostly jewelery, booze and knick-nacks. lisa doesn't like jamacia any more. (my friend mitch toured the island in a jeep and said it was nice.)

at night, we took in the ice show. it was a small rink, but had a world-class show, including several professional mini-competitions.

day 5: grand cayman

we went on an excursion that let us kyak along their famous seven mile beach. then we went snorkeling in a small reef not too far off shore. there were an amazing amount of amazing-looking fish. very cool. it makes both of us want to get certified for scuba and come back.

at night, we took in the 'headliner' show featuring a stand-up comic, and a singing former soap-opera star. the weather gets cloudy and slightly stormy, with only a few drops of rain.

day 6: couzamel

we went on an all-day excursion: first, we took the ferry from couzamel to the mainland (the yukatan peninusula of mexico). unfortunatly, it was quite rough and everyone on board got queasy. off the ferry, we had to walk thru town (playa del carmen) to get our bus. we got to walk around the mayan ruins at tulum, an hour south. the grey mayan ruins were between the dense green jungle and the rocky black cliffs over the blue carriban waters. very colorful and looking like it stepped out of a postcard. our tour guide, carlos, was very knowledgable about mayan culture, and even explained their base-20 number system, and how they were the first civilization to invent the zero. personally, i'm very used to using other number systems because of computers: base 16 (hexadecimal), base 10 (normal decimal system), base 8 (octal) and base 2 (binary).

next, we went to xel-ha. it's a large lagoon with white sand on the bottom and small black boulders all around. there were exotic fish everywhere. we really wanted to snorkel, but we were too tired. since the water was crystal clear, we just relaxed and watched the fish and the dolphins. it was overcast, but it was plenty warm enough. it was a tiring bus ride, walk thru town, ferry ride, and wait in line to get back on the ship.
