Teacher Resources
- Web 66
- Web 66 is based on the metaphor that the highway Route 66 crossed the country and brought our nation together, and now the information super-highway is offering great opportunities for bringing people together throughout the world. This site offers many excellent links for educators, as well as information about how to set up network services at your school.
- NASA's Quest Program
- This is NASA's K-12 internet initiative site. They have information on online projects, like getting students involved with planning usage time of the Hubble Space Telescope for student projects, and writing grants for money from NASA.
- Wentworth Worldwide Media's Classroom Connect
- If you are using a slow connection, you may not want to jump to this site. Its whole first page is a large image map that could take some time to download. This page does provide information on interesting links for educators, as well as information about educational conferences. It also has a listing of products and services for educators.
- The Awesome Lists
- This really isn't a site for educators. What this site has is lists of sites that could be used in a presentation on the World Wide Web. The author of these lists has gathered sites that show the best of the net.
- Berit's Best Sites for Children
- Again, this site isn't really for educators, but it does provide some excellent links for children to explore. If I were teaching elementary school, I think that I would consider having this site as the page that automatically loads on any classroom web browsers.
- SchoolNet
- This site is put together by different educational groups in Canada. Whoever is in charge of the site likes big graphics, so it is somewhat slow in loading. It appears to have information on specific courses (I didn't spend much time in this site, since the loading speed was annoying me too much!).
- Interesting Places for Kids
-
- Kid's Web
- This site bills itself as a digital library for students. It provides links by subject area. Even though it lists Mathematics under the Science catagory (which irritates me!), the site itself looks pretty decent. Be careful though, the graphics take some time to load.
- Los Alamos Middle School Computer
- Los Alamos Middle School (in Los Alamos, New Mexico) has put together a pretty good web site. They also have some links for educators, and a page of links put together by their students. I think that school web sites are really neat, so check this one out.
- Newton's Apple
- This is the official site for the PBS show Newton's Apple. It gives all of the topics that will be covered this season, as well as lesson plans to use in class dealing with the topics.
- Online Educator
- This is an online magazine that offers good information about educational sites, as well as tips on how to integrate the Internet into the classroom. This is a definate must-see site.
- TENET Web
- This page contains links to World Wide Web servers at K - 12 institutions all over the world. I used this site to jump to the Akatsukayama school in Kobe, Japan. They had pictures and first hand reports of the Earthquake that hit there in January of 1995.
- KidLink
-
- AskERIC
- ERIC is an excellent set of resources for educators. It is a collection of lesson plans, and other resources. I am proud to say that one of my professors developed ERIC. Be careful, this site takes a *long* time to load, so go get a cup of coffee after clicking here, or turn "load graphics" off on your browser.
- Project Gutenberg
- This site contains over 10,000 copyright-free texts for teachers to use.
- WWW Virtual Library
- This site offers a huge list of educational sites on the 'net. They are all in alphabetical order, and most have descriptions. Unfortunately, they are all on the same page (which lengthens the loading time), and they don't seem to have any kind of a theme. Still, this is a great page to start exploring.
- Scholastic Central
- This is an interesting site. Scholastic Inc has put together some interesting links and projects. I read about a man who was training for a high altitude marathon by living for a month on Mount Everest.
- The Bookstore
- This site is an extension of the ERIC site. It has books and publications that are available to buy on a wide variety of topics. It offers good descriptions of the materials also.
- Public Broadcast Service Web
- How can you go wrong with the official site for PBS? Amongst other things, this site has links to home pages for all of PBS's educational programing.
- Doty's Education Page
- This is a neat site. This person has put together links by subject area, as well as articles on things like on-line access and acceptable use policies.
