(Provence) THE MOSQUE BUILDERS. I am writing a book on the mosque builders, modeled on Gimpel's "THE CATHEDRAL BUILDERS."New December 19, 2011: Presentation speculating on architectural sketch plans in the Middle Ages that I made to the Architecture department at KFUPM December 19, 2011

Background

From my background in medieval archaeology and my work with the group studying Islamic Architecture out of the KAC Cresswell Library at the Amer. Univ. in Cairo in the early 1970's, I would like to continue my research collaboratively through this web page. I wrote my thesis in Cairo on "Al-Darb al-Ahmar, the History and Esthetics of a Medieval Street in Cairo." NEW LINK=The Creswell Exhibition 2004. We used to exchange notes on architecture from reading Maqrizi's "KHITAT" collectively(English site), which is a link to my page as it was archived by some web service after geocities terminated our free web sites.

Now I am using this page to put together my thoughts on the architects in Medieval Islam, their use of Mathematics and the beauty of the buildings they designed. Please e-mail me with any comments or suggestions

Interests, Activities & Plans

One of the essential references, which collects all of Maqrizi's dating references to mosques in Cairo is Creswell's Brief Chronology. Now as of July 2005 it is available on line in PDF just click on BIFAO-Bulletin de l'institut francais d'archeologie orientale under authors and put Creswell. The monuments of Cairo were restored by the "Comité," a group of Egyptians influenced by the French restoration movement started by Violet le Duc, in the early 1900's but now as the city grows and pollution and ground water rises, I have heard that the masonry is flaking. I will try to provide pictures on this site of the way these and other famous Islamic monuments were at the time of the important early twentieth centry restoration work, as well as more recent work by the Arab state's antiquities departments. Link to view itinerary of my recent trip to Egypt.

Guestbook and The Mosque Builders book

If, after reading the Draft of "THE MOSQUE BUILDERS" below, you wish to contact me, please do so. My name is Denis Hoppe. Please contact me if you have any documentation or leads on who were the architects in Classical Islam(8th through 15th centuries)--I know that we know a considerable amount about architects in the Ottoman periiod: Sinan, etc. I have provided a Guestbook

(View Guestbook)where your comments can be left in a collaborative fashion. My apologies if, for some reason, your computer cannot accept the guestbook link. Simply e-mail me directly in that case. Be that as it may, this is still meant to be a research page in "The Mosque Builders."
