No Gas Station

This page is devoted to the fight against the proposed gas station at the corner of North Territorial and Dexter Pinckney Roads (in Dexter Township, Michigan).  We believe this gas station should not be built for several reasons.

  1. The Michigan Department of Environomental Quality expressed concern about locating gas storage tanks in the area.  Petroleum storage is inappropriate in sensitive recharge areas.  The site has been established as a sensitive recharge area.
  2. The residents have repeatedly voiced opposition to the project (there are already plenty of gas stations nearby).
  3. The site is a recreational area.  The gas station would destroy the rural character of the area when it is not needed or wanted by the residents.
  4. The gas station will add to light pollution and affect Peach Mountain Observatory (located about one mile away).
  5. An increase in trash and noise is expected.

What Can You Do?

We are suggesting that the public get more involved in order to defeat this project.  Lets not leave it up to chance at this point, we need to do everything (legally) that we can possibly do in order to defeat this project.  Writing letters to the Dexter Township officials and to the local newspapers and/or endorsing one of the following letters is suggested.

The issue was discussed on September 6 at the Dexter Township Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA).  A final decision of 6-0 against the gas station was made at a special ZBA meeting on September 11.  It is likely the developer will take this matter to Circuit Court.
