Bob Kozma and Dan Sullivan represented NSF and SRI on a visit to the University of Michigan to evaluate UCDT progress. Fourteen faculty and five graduate student assistants attended the Faculty Advisory Committee Meeting to participate in an update on progress-to-date and to answer questions about the climate for interdisciplinarity at UM.

The Office of the Vice President for Research made a formal presentation to the University of Michigan Board of Regents on the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Students who had taken one or both of the Introduction to Global Change courses were featured in this video presentation. During this meeting, the Provost proposed a plan to the Board of Regents to spend $450,000 to enhance research opportunities for undergraduates.

This Faculty Forum Broadcast Sponsored by NSF’s Division of Undergraduate Education had an audience of 1,000 downlink sites across the country. The hour-long program included an overview of the Introduction to Global Change Web site, a video featuring student comments on the impact of the courses, and a discussion of the issues involved in developing a rigorous, yet accessible, curriculum in Global Change for both science and non-science majors.

The UCDT team hosted the Summer Workshop of the NASA/USRA supported Earth System Science Educators (ESSE) group at the University of Michigan. Workshop centered on evaluation in Earth System Science curricula. The UCDT evaluation and teaching team presented the keynote presentation and a morning-long workshop on curriculum evaluation.
