- New publication in Journal of Teacher Education– "The Work of Teaching and the Challenge for Teacher Education"
Deborah Ball and Francesca Forzani have authored a new article that appears in the November/December 2009 issue of the Journal of Teacher Education. In the article, Ball and Forzani argue that "improvements in student learning depend on substantial, large-scale changes in how we prepare and support teachers." Practice should be the core of teachers' professional preparation, and past efforts to improve teacher quality have been overly focused on teacher recruitment and retention, without enough attention paid to the detailed professional training needed to produce effective teachers. The authors offer examples of what might be involved in a practice-based teacher education curriculum and discuss the challenges confronting reform.
