Medina County District librarian Kathy Petras found article about auto accident which claimed lives of Elmer and his sister Mary Young, and his wife Mary Feeman 2 weeks later.
Sept 11 1934, Medina County Gazette? (copy didn't contain full name of newspaper)
"Two Killed in Canaan Tp.
Elmer Feeman, Aged Resident, Friendsville, and Sister of Burbank
Mrs. Mary Young, 84, Second Victim
Three Others Injured, Two Seriously, Are in the Lodi Hospital
Elmer Feeman, 70, of Friendsville, and his sister Mrs. Mary Young, 84, of Burbank, were killed and three other persons injured in an automobile collision at 6 o'clock Tursday afternoon at Whitmore Corners, in Canaan township, Wayne county.
The scene of the accident is a country crossroads where the Wooster-Friendsville road crosses the gravel road leading west from Canaan.
The injured persons are: Mrs. Elmer Feeman, hip broken, cuts and bruises; W. W. Knepper, 24, of Chatham, cuts and bruises; C. Wood, 49, of Chatham, internally hurt.
Knepper and Wood were in a Ford V-8 that was traveling west from Canaan, and the Feemans and Mrs. Young were traveling northward in an Overland car. Both machines were all but demolished in the collision, which is the most serious of a number of bad accidents which have occurred at the dangerous place.
J. C. Murray's ambulance took the injured persons to Lodi hospital, and the bodies of the dead to his funeral home in Creston, where they were prepared for burial.
No Witnesses
There were no witnesses to the accident, and Sheriff Bert Nauman and Coroner L. A. Adair who investigated it Friday were able to talk to only one of the survivors -- Knepper. He told them that the car he was driving was traveling "about 35 miles an hour" when it reached the cross roads, and that the other car "just seemed to appear from nowhere."
Injuries to Wood and Mrs. Feeman were so serious that hospital authorities would not permit them to be questioned.
The officers made a detailed study of the scene of the accident. Dale Wetzel and others who were early on the scene reported that the Overland car had turned over in the ditch, pinning its occupants beneath it. Both Feeman and Mrs. Young were dead when they were removed from the wreckage.
The Ford car careened across a ditch and into a corn field, and like the Overland, was badly damaged.
Knepper, officers learned, was just about recovered from injuries he sustained some months ago when he went through the windshield of a bus which was in an accident.
Continue Investigation
The investigation of the officers was continued Friday afternoon. Prosecuting Attorney Robert Critchfield accompanying the sheriff and the coroner to Lodi where more questions were asked of Knepper.
The Feemans were on their way home from Wooster at the time of the accident, having visited at the home of their nephew, Ellis Lehman, during the day.
A double funeral service for Mr. Feeman and Mrs. Young took place Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Burbank M. E. church, Rev. Mr. Jester in charge. Mr. Feeman was buried in Jackson cemetery, Mrs. Young in Burbank cemetery.
Mrs. Young, a widow, was the stepmother of the late Jesse Young, widely known Rittman insurance man who was killed a few years ago when a train struck his automobile at Easton. Mrs. Young had been living at the Feeman home. Mr. Feeman is survived by a son and daughter, Vernon Feeman, of Friendsville, and Mrs. John Smith, of Sherman, near Wadsworth.
The intersection of Whitmore Corners is not obstructed and approaching cars can be seen from both roads.
Knepper has a broken arm and crushed leg. Wood, a collar bone, arm, and possible leg fracture.
Monday the Lodi hospital reported Mrs. Feeman's condition as unchanged; Mr. Knepper returned home Saturday and Mr. Wood Sunday."
