L.H. Jonas, farmer, Orange Township, was born in Fayette County, Ind., September 17, 1838, one of eight children born to Daniel and Matilda L. (Pool) Jonas, former of whom was born in Tennessee in 1801, and the latter in Virginia in 1810. They were married in Virginia, and, from there, in 1834, moved to this county, settling in Columbia Township, where they remained until their death, Mr. Jonas dying January, 1867, his widow in September 1869. Their children were: Jacob M., Mary E.,. Liburn H., Susan A., John K., William A., Martha J., and James A. L.H., our subject, enlisted August 20, 1862 in Company G, Fifth Indiana Cavalry, and served until June 16, 1865, when he was discharged. During his service he participated in several hardfought battles and skirmishes. He was captured July, 1864, at Maco Ga., while on the Stoneman raid, and was confined in Andersonville and other prisons about nine months. After his discharge he returned to Fayette county, Ind., and was here married, October 26, 1865, to Nancy J., born in this county, March 20, 1846, daughter of Edmond and Sarah (Matney) Stevens, and to this union were born three children: Laura A., born December 22, 1866; Amanda, born April 26, 1868, and William C., born July 26, 1874. After his marriage our subject settled first in Columbia Township, and in December, 1866, moved on the farm where he has since resided. He owns eighty acres of fine land well-improved. Mr. and Mrs. Jonas are members of the United Brethren Church.

An Elizabeth Bartell is in the 1870 Perry Twp Stark Co OH census. A Josephine Bartell (probably the wife of a John H. Bartell, 147th Ohio infantry) was also in Stark Co at this time.
Daniel Hoffheins is listed in the 1830 Dover Twp York Co PA census, with 1 male < 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 female <5, and 1 female 20-30. Probably him!
Daniel Hoffines is listed as hh 315, a weaver in the 1850 Canaan Twp Wayne Co OH census, age 45, wife Sarah 43, son William 22, John 16, (both born in PA), children born in Ohio are daughter Sarah 13, son Abraham 11, daughter Lucy A. 10, Catherine 8, Elizabeth 5, Mary J. 3.
Daniel Hoffhines paid his share of the inheritance tax as son of Henry Hoffphines, Jan 1, 1866. He bought his father's horse wagon for 8.75, and a few other things, at the estate sale.
Sarah Hoffhines both a sythe & snead for 10 cents at Henry Hoffhines 1864 estate sale.
Listed in Lindy's ahnentafel as Mary P; in Don Shaeffer's as Mary Jane.

Susan Bartel went to live with the Shives after Solomon died; William administered her estate after her death.

I have Andrew Messersmith in my family line. He was b 3 Jan 1802 Wythe Co., VA s/o Andrew Messersmith, Sr. Elizabeth. Andrew, Jr. md Ruth Smith 21 Jun 1826 Fayette Co., IN d 30 Apr 1839 Fayette Co., IN. They had a son Andrew Messersmith b abt 1837 Kosciusko Co., IN. Andrew Messersmith, Sr. who md Elizabeth b abt 1773 probably in Botetourt Co., VA s/o Johannes Messerschmidt Catarina Becker. Andrew Sr died bef 26 Feb 1839 Kosciusko Co., IN. According to the 1850 Census for Fayette Co, a Margaret A. Jonas age 17 was living in the household of William (age 60) and Lucinda (age 59) Jonas, along with Mary J. Kennedy age 13 and Levina Jonas age 3. William and Lucinda Jonas were from Virginia.

William JONAS born in 1812 (son of William JONAS b. abt. 1789 in Virginia and Lucinda ? born abt. 1791 in Virginia) married Elizabeth "Betsy" MESSERSMITH, daughter of John MESSERSMITH and Molly Magdalena ?, on 20 Aug 1837 in Columbia Twp., Fayette, Indiana. Betsy was born in 1814 in Virginia. They had the following children: (1). John JONAS born in 1839 in Fayette Co., IN, (2). Huldy A. JONAS born abt. 1841 in Fayette Co., IN, (3). Jacob JONAS born in 1843 in Fayette Co., IN, (4). Ann JONAS born in 1845 in Fayette Co., IN, (5). Godfrey JONAS born in 1847 in, Fayette Co., IN, (6). Esthet JONAS born in 1853 in, Fayette Co., IN.
