Alpine Parents Of 14 Children To Observe Their Golden Wedding Day On Monday

WOODS CROSS, Nov. 26.--Honoring the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Bair, a family dinner will be held Monday in Alpine, where the couple lived for many years. A reception for friends and neighbors will be held from 6 until 9 p.m.
The couple are pioneer Idaho homesteaders. They made their home in the Eagle Rock country near Idaho Falls, soon after their marriage in the Logan Temple, Nov. 28, 1888.
Later they moved to Alpine, where they lived until 15 years ago, when Mr. Bair went into the sheep business near Glenwood Springs, Colo. Recently they moved to Woods Cross. In the winters they do temple work.
Mr. Bair was born in Eaton, O. Dec. 19, 1862. He has been active in Church work, filling a mission in the Western States.
A native of Woods Cross, Mrs Bair was born there Nov. 23, 1862 a daughter of Daniel and Melvina Moss. They are the parents of 14 children, eight of whom are living. They have 33 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Samuel W BARE

The 1880 Huntington Twp Huntington Co census has Sam Bare age 55, married, born Ohio, a pauper in the county infirmary. Later in same infirmary list is Sarah Bare, age 50, born in Ohio.

Sarah's obituaries say she married Samuel Bare at age 18 (c 1838) and he died in 1873, after which she went "over the hills to the county house, to spend the rest of her days" (Evening Herald, Feb26, 1910, p4c3; Daily News Democrat, Feb 26,1910, p8 c2). They also mention a child who died before her. Huntington County Records, and the Andrews Express newpaper, have Samuel W. Bare died March 2 1885 in Polk Twp. Two Sam Bare's? Misinformation from county house for obituaries? Did child rather than husband die in 1873? Haven't found < 1840 marriage for her in Huntington records. Our Samuel didn't move to Indiana until after 1850. Wrong wife for our Sam W?

Andrews Express, March 5, 1885, p. 1: "Samuel Bear, of Polk township, a man well advanced in years, died Monday, at Monument City."

See footnotes on mixup between our Sam and Samuel Trone Bair.

Daily News Democrat, 2/26/10, p8c2:
"Sarah Ann Bare. Mrs. Sarah Ann Bare, an aged inmate of the county infirmary breathed her last this morning after prolonged suffering from a complication of diseases. She was a woman past ninety years of age, and was born in Kentucky. When three years old her parents removed to this county. At the age of eighteen she was married to Samuel Bare, a farmer in poor circumstances, who resided in the southeastern part of the county. One child, now dead, was born to the union. A short time after the death of her husband in 1873, she entered the county infirmary, where she had been an inmate until the time of her death.
She was affiliated with the Dunkard church and was a favorite with the other inmates of the infirmary, because of her cheerful disposition. The remains are now lying at the Bailey morgue. The funeral will be held at Monument City, Monday, Rev. Kennedy, of Mt Etna officiating. Interment will be in the Dunkard church cemetery."
Evening Herald, 2/26/10, p4c3:
"Aged Mrs. Bare Goes. Sarah Anna Bare, an inmate at the county infirmary since 1873, died this morning at 6:30, death resulting from general infirmities. She had been a resident of Huntington county many years, but through unfortunate circumstances was a ward of county charity about thirty-seven years. To the knowledge of near relatives, no blood kin survive, at least not in this section of the country.
Mrs. Bare was born in Kentucky over ninety years ago. At the age of three, she was taken down the Ohio river by her parents and came across into Indiana. The family finally drifted north. When coming to woman's estate she married Samuel Bare, and they settled near Monument City. To them one child was born. On the death of these she suffered by the misfortunes of fate and went over the hills to the county house, to spend the rest of her days.
A devout member of the German Baptist church, Mrs. Bare spent much of her time in singing songs of praise and kneeling in prayer. She had often expressed a wish to die with songs of goodness upon her lips. Burial and services will be conducted at Monument City Monday at ten, the cortege leaving this city at 8:30 in the morning. Rev. Kennedy of Mt. Etna will officiate."

John H. BARE

John is mentioned several times in the West Alexandria (Preble Co OH) sesquicentennial book. He was the village brickmason who built many of the structures in the town. The house he built (with his own bricks) in 1847 is still occupied (June 2001): 33 Main St, Tyler and Grace Davis live there; they bricked up the right front door, among other changes. They are friends of town historian Audrey Gilbert and don't mind visitors.

John owned the best sugar maple grove in the area. He sold land to the school, where students would go outside and eat sugar during recess. He also sold land to the Church of the Brethren (of which he was a member) for its building.

His stone no longer exists at the old Lutheran cemetery. It was turned into a park and many stones were moved to Sugar Hill or Sugar Grove or Twin Valley, etc., though his was not mentioned among those moved.
Old Town Cemetery entry in Audrey Gilbert's Cemetery Book for Preble Co lists his age of death as 83 y 5 m 23 d.
No children are mentioned in "A General History of Miami Valley Pioneers". William J. Bare, 1856-1882, in same cemetery as John & Elizabeth (Old Town).
