Notes

John H. BARE

John is mentioned several times in the West Alexandria (Preble Co OH) sesquicentennial book. He was the village brickmason who built many of the structures in the town. The house he built (with his own bricks) in 1847 is still occupied (June 2001): 33 Main St, Tyler and Grace Davis live there; they bricked up the right front door, among other changes. They are friends of town historian Audrey Gilbert and don't mind visitors.

John owned the best sugar maple grove in the area. He sold land to the school, where students would go outside and eat sugar during recess. He also sold land to the Church of the Brethren (of which he was a member) for its building.

His stone no longer exists at the old Lutheran cemetery. It was turned into a park and many stones were moved to Sugar Hill or Sugar Grove or Twin Valley, etc., though his was not mentioned among those moved.
Old Town Cemetery entry in Audrey Gilbert's Cemetery Book for Preble Co lists his age of death as 83 y 5 m 23 d.
No children are mentioned in "A General History of Miami Valley Pioneers". William J. Bare, 1856-1882, in same cemetery as John & Elizabeth (Old Town).

Sarah or Elisabeth May

Suspect Elisabeth May rather than Sarah unknown surname as indicated in correspondence from L. Hoffine, due to marriage record in Trinity Reformed Church of York, PA, at the correct time [York County Trinity Reformed Church, York, PA, had a marriage between Henrich Hofheins and Elisabeth May on Nov 11, 1813. This is not very useful -- but will send it..

From The Gospel Messenger , 1885

The subject of this sketch, Eld. Henry Bare, died Aug. 25, 1885

Eld. Henry was born in Warren Co, Ohio, Aug. 25, 1803. With his parents he
came to Preble Co, in 1816. He was married to Mary A. Foreman Dec. 21,
1826, and he and his wife were baptized by Eld. John Hart in 1835. He was
chosen to the ministry in November, 1842, but not being present at the
time, he did not receive his charge till Dec. 25, 1842. He began his
ministerial work early in 1843 and was ordained to the eldership in 1861
and for some time was elder of the Four Mile church, Ind. His marriage was
blessed with fifteen children, six of whom have already passed away.
After he had shown a failing of both mind and body for some months, he passed
away Aug. 25, 1885, his birthday, at the age of 82 years. The burial was
at Sugar Hill, Preble Co, with a large attendance. The aged sister who had
so well borne with him the Labors of life and had been his constant
attendant all the time of his sickness, made choice of 2 Tim. 4:7 and Amos
4:12 for Eld. Jacob Garber and the writer to use as texts for the occasion,
as a lesson that all may heed and fight the good fight and so prepare to
meet their God. Landon West
