a studio art course in traditional- and new-media installation
art
Spend four weeks at the Abbey of Pontlevoy, France and work with students
from across campus to engage in a studio course that allows exploration
of each student's preferred creative medium. This program is led by
faculty from the School of Art and Design. Classroom sessions and weekly
critiques/discussions are supplemented with directed studio time.
Dates:
May 16 - June 12, 2010 (Arrival Date: May 16; Departure Date: June
12)
All participants must arrange their own travel to and from Paris De
Gaulle Airport. For Sunday, May 16, schedule your flight to arrive
before 3:00 pm. For Saturday, June 12, schedule your return flight
after 12:00 noon.
Pre-program travel is allowed, but remember to be at the Charles De
Gaulle Airport by 3:00 pm on May 16. Post-program travel must be scheduled
after 12:00 pm on June 12.

Course Description
ARTDES 322 SITE Pontlevoy France (a studio art course in traditional
and new media installation art). Open to students of all levels,
this spring-term course brings artists and students to the 16th Century
Abbey of Pontlevoy, France. Located in the Loire valley, the historic
core of France, near magnificent chateaux, ancient vineyards, churches
and villages, the class will explore the importance of site in the
development of ideas in studio practice. A site’s specific location,
it’s history and culture, has been one of the most fundamental inspirations
for artistic endeavor . Through traditional techniques such as drawing
and painting to sound recording and video projection, students will
conceive, execute, and exhibit new creative work at the Abbey's gallery.
• Students are required to register for ARTDES 322.001, class #56145
for the Spring 2010 term.
• ARTDES 322 = 3 UM in-residence credits.
• Course meets Monday from 2-5 pm and Tuesday through Thursday from
9am to 12 noon
• Tuesday through Thursday from 2-5pm will be directed studio time
and weekly group • critiques/discussions. Fridays are reserved for
field trips.
• Undergraduate students from all UM Schools and Colleges are welcome
to apply.
• No course prerequisites.
• Grading is based upon creative work and a journal, as well as attendance
and class participation.
• First two weeks - group and individual projects
• Second two weeks - final projects
• Lectures and workshops in drawing, sound
and video
• Friday Field Trips - the class will travel to visit regional sites
including cities: Paris, Tours, Orleans; nearby castles: Blois, Amboise,
Chaumont and/or Chambord; and the villages of Chabris and Selle sur
Cher
• Weekends are left open for student free-time and travel

Professor Y. David Chung, UM School of Art & Design
Y. David Chung is a multimedia artist and filmmaker known for his film
and video work, installations, drawings, prints, and public artworks.
Chung's work has been shown throughout the country in exhibitions
at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the
Asia Society, the Walker Arts Center, the Studio Museum in Harlem,
the William's College Museum of Art and a solo exhibition at the
Whitney Museum of American Art. Professor
Chung was recognized by the Institut de France through an artist fellowship
at the Fondation Claude Monet. He maintains close ties to France, having
collaborated with regional artists.

Art Supplies, Equipment and Facilities
Students are responsible for bringing their own art supplies, a recommended list
will be provided upon request. Some art supplies are available locally.
Students who are interested in video and sound recording must bring their own
equipment
Laptops with appropriate software are required
Internet connection is available

for qualified students.
Housing:
Students will be housed in the Abbey of Pontlevoy.
Students will have access to the Abbey kitchen to prepare in-house
meals and free laundry facilities. Pontlevoy has a grocery store, pharmacy,
bakery, pizza restaurant, ATM, small cafe - all within walking distance
of the Abbey.

All US citizens require
a valid passport to enter France. The length of the summer program
(4 weeks) allows US students to enter France as tourists. A Student
