Topics include: episodes of extinction and diversification over earth history, the geographic distribution of species, ecological and genetic factors that put species at risk, conservation strategies and sustainable use of ecosystems.
Weekly discussion sessions explore course material through readings, videos, gaming simulations, and role-playing of topics such as the over-harvesting of ocean fishes, settlement of the Amazon, and the effects of species invasions.
NRE 220 is intended as an introduction to the topic. Completion of or concurrent enrollment in NRE/BIO/AOSS 110, BIO 154, or AP Biology is recommended.
This course may be used to satisfy the Junior-Senior writing requirement.
