Research Interests: Rivers and Landscapes

Professor Allan’s research includes three primary strands:  (1) Land-water linkages and stream ecosystem function,  (2) Conservation and restoration of stream ecosystems, (3) Population and community ecology.  Geographically, much of this research takes place in Michigan.  Recent research activities in Venezuela  and Alaska are now in the manuscript development stage, and may result in further research in the future.

While not research in the narrow sense, I have a strong interest in the application of science to river conservation.  I recently completed a six-year stint as Chair of the Science and Technical Advisory Committee of American Rivers, and serve on an advisory panel to a program of The Nature Conservancy that funds post-doctoral researchers in conservation and aquatic sciences.
